Regulations changed to allow supplementary prescribing of controlled drugs
Nurses and pharmacist supplementary prescribers will be able to prescribe
controlled drugs under clinical management plans, following amendments to the
Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001.
From 14 March 2005, supplementary prescribers in secondary care will be able
to prescribe controlled drugs (apart from Schedule 1 drugs, which are not
intended for medicinal use). NHS regulations need altering to allow
reimbursement of prescriptions for controlled drugs written by supplementary
prescribers in primary care. The Department of Health, in a letter to
non-medical prescribing leads, says that it hopes this will be possible in
April or May, subject to Parliamentary approval.
